Equal Justice Under Law
Helaine M. Barnett, President of Legal Services Corporation
What: Legal Services Corporation’s (LSC) groundbreaking Justice Gap Report, issued in October 2005, reveals that more than half of those eligible to receive federally-funded civil legal aid are turned away due to lack of resources – more than a million people each year, most of whom are women with children. LSC President Helaine Barnett will discuss the relationship between the concept of justice for all and low-income Americans’ access to legal assistance. Barnett became president of LSC in January 2004 after serving 37 years with the Legal Aid Society of New York City. LSC funds 138 legal aid programs with 700 offices around the nation to help poor Americans gain equal access to the judicial system.
